When I was in Jr High School, an jerky English teacher had us learn the "I am a jew" speech from Merchant of Venice. On the day we were to recite it, the teacher said: " Bruce, you're the only jewish person in the class...why don't you go first...this should be good. " Because of the way he spoke, I refused to get up and do it. The teacher made me go down to the Principal's office. The pricipal asked why I was sent down to him as I'd never been in trouble before. I explained what happened and he asked if I would write out the speech for him. I did and he followed me back to class and said, " Bruce knows the speech. Give him an A ." He then said to the teacher that he would speak to him after class. It was the first and only time in my life that I felt prejudice.
